What is Opal?
Opals are formed after trapped rainwater evaporates in sedimentary rock layers, leaving behind silica deposits. These microscopic pieces of silica create rainbow-like colors in precious opals (called the “play-of-color”) and give each opal unique, one-of-a-kind colors. It is almost impossible to find two identical opals.
What's the Meaning of the Opal Engagement Ring?
Opals are very effective in increasing love in a relationship or adding depth to a relationship. It is said that opals increase creativity and symbolize fidelity. As an engagement ring, the opal perfectly represents the unique spark and fire in your relationship, and its inimitable nature is a huge draw for those who want a truly one-of-a-kind ring.
Durability of Opal Engagement Ring
In fact, while opal has a fantastic and beautiful appearance, it is softer than most gemstones and is rated on the Mohs scale of hardness at 5.5 to 6.0. Because of their softness, opal rings are not suitable for all-day wear and require special care when wearing and caring for your ring. If you have a love for opals, you will have to be careful with your opal ring.
Types of Opals
There’s a wide range of opal types, ranging from nearly translucent crystal opals to dark and moody black opals. Fire opals, sometimes called Mexican fire opals, are transparent to translucent and have warm colors of yellow, orange, and red, while Peruvian or blue opals come in shades of blue and green. Black opals are the darkest and rare of all opals, with a price tag to match their relative scarcity. Like many gemstones, synthetic opals are also an option and are distinguishable from natural opals because of the regularity of the silica patterns.
